Drovers win

Llanelli RFC 5 -19 Llandovery RFC

The Carmarthenshire derby at Parc Y Scarlets went the way of the Drovers who continued their bright opening to the season with a third consecutive win.

The Drovers had got maximum points against RGC and Bridgend and although they did not get the full points this time, they will be well satisfied with this clear cut win against their old county rivals.

Early pressure belonged to the Drovers and after a series of attacks Llanelli flanker Ellis Thomas was sin binned for an offside on his own line.

A lineout take by lock Jack Jones set up a driving ball for flanker Stuart Worrall to burrow over for a 5-0 lead to the visitors.

It was not long before the dangerous Llandovery backs opened up and Lee Williams came off his wing to feed lock Joe Powell with an inside pass for the Crymych product to run in from 20 metres.

Fly half Jack Maynard converted but the Sospans went on the attack with the return of Thomas and all but forced their way over from close range.

A fine 50 metre kick from Maynard put the Drovers back on attack and when Llanelli infringed out on the right Maynard’s penalty attempt came back off the left upright.

Flanker Nathan Hart’s work at the breakdown set up a Llanelli attack but it was all spoiled by a loss of the ball in the contact area in the face of strong Llandovery tackling led by skipper and No 8 Richard Brooks.

There was more urgency in the home play after the break and from a close range line out it took a great turnover from flanker Lewis Ellis-Jones to stop a score.

Llanelli could make little progress against firm defence and they were lucky not to go further behind when Maynard missed a 30 metre penalty.

Powell then got his second try after good work from a Llandovery line out and a slipped pass from replacement flanker Duane Eager.

Yellow cards for both replacement prop Berian Watkins and Powell gave Llanelli some hope with 10 minutes to go and a cross kick from replacement Blly McBryde was well gathered by replacement full back Ryan Davies for the only home success of the day.
