Match Report

Tough day out..with a win

Bargoed club captain Leigh Meades feels there are still plenty of positives for the newly-promoted side despite going down to their fourth defeat in five Principality Premiership outings.

They were well beaten by a competent Llanelli side in tricky conditions at Bargoed Park but hooker Meades, who came on as a second half replacement, remains quietly confident.

He said: “This was a tough game, but we are on a massive learning curve at the moment after being promoted last season.

“To be honest, I don’t think we expected to do as well as we have done so far in terms of on-the-field performance even if the results have gone against us.

“In the opening games we have shown we definitely have something to offer to the Premiership by playing some really good rugby.

“We started off slowly against Neath, we deserved the victory over Swansea and we gave a very good account of ourselves against current leaders Aberavon.

“We have three years to get things right so we are in this for the long haul.”

But Meades had to admit that Llanelli were the better side in this match particularly in the way they played to the wet conditions and heavy pitch.

He added: “Llanelli put us in positions we did not want to be and we struggled at the lineout and occasionally at the scrum.”

Llanelli took the lead through a fifth minute try by impressive full-back Dion Jones, who also kicked two penalties – one in each half.

Inside half Rhodri Cole snapped up a 34th minute touchdown after home hooker Ian Jenkins had been shown a yellow card for an offence near his line while Trystan Lloyd was an outstanding performer in the visitors’ pack.

Bargoed had to be satisfied with a wing David Evans try 13 minutes after the restart – Llanelli having deservedly led 13-0 at the interval.

Llanelli head coach David Flanagan said: “Bargoed was obviously going to be a tough place to come to and I am sure they will turn over a number of teams here in the future.

“I am really pleased with the way our boys fronted up to the challenge.”
