Match Report

Ironmen show their strength

Merthyr came into the game on the back of a five-game winning streak, which included three wins in the league and two Fosters Cup victories

Lee Jarvis always felt confident that Merthyr would leave Parc y Scarlets with a victory despite trailing Llanelli 14-7 at half time in their Principality Premiership clash.

Merthyr came into the game on the back of a five-game winning streak, which included three wins in the league and two Fosters Cup victories. In contrast Llanelli were looking to avoid their fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.

And the signs were positive as Kieran Jones scored an early try. Merthyr hit back through Rhys Williams but went behind again when Josh McLeod crashed over for a second try.

But head coach Jarvis didn’t panic and was confident his players could turn the game around. The Ironmen went on to score 28 unanswered points to secure their seventh successive win.

“Llanelli played well in the first half. We made too many errors and got punished,” he explained

“No one played well and we needed to improve. But I wasn’t worried. I always thought we would turn the game around.

“I said at half time that we needed to try and control the game more. We needed to put more pressure on them, find the gaps and to be fair to them, the players did just that.”

Llanelli opened the scoring with a fine team move, involving Jack Condy and Declan Smith, with Jones crashing over. Billy McBryde fired in the conversion. Merthyr replied through Williams, with Matthew Jarvis converting.

But the hosts took advantage of a lapse in concentration with McLeod reaching the try line too easily, McBryde hit the conversion. However, Merthyr have lost just once this season and they showed why with a stunning second-half performance.

Ben Murphy, Matthew Trowbridge, Rhys Downes and Elis Wyn Benham all crashed over, with Jarvis kicking all the conversions to seal a bonus-point win.
