Llanelli travelled to the Borders to play Gala in Round 5 of the B & I Cup knowing they needed to score four tries and win the match at Netherdale, to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the Quarterfinals.
Duane Eager led the team, which saw Stuart Leach stepping up from the bench with the late withdrawal of Jake Ball.
In near perfect conditions Owen Williams opened the scoring with a penalty within a minute.
Surprisingly, Gala were turning down their kickable penalties but found Llanelli determined to keep their try line in tact.
However, another lineout variation on 16 minutes saw Gary Graham touching down following a peel and off load from another driving lineout. Outside half Millar kicked the touchline conversion for a 7-3 lead.
Llanelli then stunned the vociferous home supporters with three tries in seven minutes with tries from Dale Ford, (22) Stuart Leach (25) and Duane Eager (29th minute) with Owen Williams kicking one of the conversions.
Llanelli’s defence was again committed and organized which frustrated and pressurized the home side into many handling errors. Gala then eventually decided to take on the penalty points on offer as Millar kicked a fine 45-metre penalty just before halftime to bring them within 10 points.
Skipper Eager scored the vital fourth try within a minute of the restart, which Williams converted, for a commanding 27-10 lead.
Williams also kicked another two penalties and Gala deservedly got a couple of well-worked tries from Andy Maclean and Craig Robertson.
Gala 20 – 33 Llanelli RFC
Llanelli now need the same result (five points, with the opposition getting 0 points) against Moseley at home this Sunday 20th January, which kicks off at Parc Y Scarlets at 2.30pm
